Circular wedding bands go back at least as far as Ancient Egypt. The circular shape symbolized undying love. The ring is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was believed this finger had a direct connection to the heart. Rings were originally made of grass or hemp, and had to be replaced often. Over the centuries they evolved though stone and iron to silver and gold. Originally rings made of precious metal were only for royalty. How surprised- and no doubt annoyed – they would be to come back today and discover that just about anyone can buy one at the local mall!!
